Hypothyroidism is currently diagnosed in an estimated 27 million people in the United States. Millions more are undiagnosed, under-diagnosed or under-treated. Additionally, medical doctors are finding more often that subclinical hypothyroidism, i.e., low thyroid function without symptoms like fatigue or feeling cold, can affect people at any time in their lives simply due to poor nutrition.

Slowed Metabolism, Slow Burn of Calories

When the thyroid gland is not sufficiently active, it can lead to weight troubles. Thyroid hormones, T4 and T3, regulate the body’s metabolism—they provide every cell in the body with the energy needed to function. They are critical for burning calories. If levels of thyroid hormones are low, you burn fewer calories per day. An underactive thyroid makes every calorie count more, sometimes double. It makes losing weight a slower process or makes it twice as difficult.

Clinical signs and symptoms of an underactive thyroid are the result of a slowed metabolism—weight gain, weakness and fatigue, persistent constipation, cold hands and feet, dry and flaky skin, thinning hair, brittle nails, and a slow pulse (1;2).

It's just about impossible to live in this country and not know that we are in the midst of an "obesity epidemic." If you watch television, listen to the radio, read the newspaper or simply notice the magazine headlines at the supermarket checkout, you can't help but be aware that nearly 56 per cent of Canadians are overweight and that our obesity rate has doubled over the past twenty years. Everyone seems to have an explanation for our collective weight crisis: some hold the fast-food industry responsible; others blame our sedentary lifestyle. Some maintain we are eating too much fat; others say we are eating too many carbohydrates. So what's the truth?

Well, all of these reasons are part of the answer. But if you reduce the problem to its physiological cause, it’s actually quite simple: we're consuming more calories than we're expending, and the resulting surplus is stored around our waists, hips and thighs as fat. There's no mystery here. But to understand why we are consuming more calories, we need to get back to basics and look at the three fundamental elements of our diet: carbohydrates, fats and protein. We need to understand the role these components play in the digestive system and how they work together – whether we're in the process of getting fat or thin.

We'll start with carbohydrates, since the popularity of low-carbohydrate diets like the Atkins program has made them a hot topic and given them a bad rap. Carbohydrates have been so much in the news over the past few years that a new word – "carbs" – has entered the language. Though they've been blamed for all our weight problems, their role in weight control has really been misunderstood.

Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are a necessary part of a healthy diet. They are rich in fibre, vitamins and minerals, including antioxidants, which we now know play an important role in the prevention of heart disease and cancer. Carbohydrates are also the primary source of energy for our bodies. They are found in grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes (beans) and dairy products.

Study – Fasting Causes Enzyme to Switch Off Production of Fat, Cholesterol

A new report reviews fasting as a new approach for healthy weight loss.

Harvard researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital have found that fasting causes an enzyme (SIRT1) to shut down production of fat and cholesterol, which could open up the scientific field to studying new approaches for lowering weight and improving lipid profiles.

Fasting has been previously known to suppress proteins called SREBPs, which are responsible for controlling fat synthesis and storage, but the mechanism was not well understood. The researchers reported that after a series of experiments in worms, fruitflies and mice they found that fasting acts directly on SIRT1, one of a family of sirtuin enzymes, thereby down-regulating these SREBPs.

Sirtuin enzymes have become an active area of research since early 2000s because of findings that stimulation of sirtuin activity—via calorie restriction, intermittent fasting and compounds such as resveratrol—protected mice fed a high-calorie diet against weight gain, and increased the lifespan in nematode worms, fruitflies, fish and rodents.

Geneticists and medical researchers are only just beginning to understand how genes encode sirtuin enzymes, how the enzymes influence energy metabolism, and investigating various drugs as possible candidates to stimulate SIRT1.
